Our Story

The idea behind MSI was simple – build a better business model for renters insurance, leveraging technology to deliver an easy online experience for these customers.

In 2015, insurance veterans Jim Roche and Brian Schultz set out to tackle this challenge, leaving their corporate jobs to create a new tech platform from scratch that would support every phase of the policy, featuring real-time payment processing and document delivery.

Meeting customer needs at scale

Meeting customer needs at scale

Like most startups, the challenge came in turning the business plan – sketched out on a whiteboard – into a reality.

After months of chasing fronting carriers, setting up a claims administrator, filing products, and programming on a $300 Asus laptop, the system went live and the first policy sold within minutes. Several months later, MSI reached a milestone, selling 1,000 new policies in a day, confirming that the business model was meeting a true customer need on a large scale.

In 2019, MSI launched its second product, tenant legal liability, and since then has added over 20 more, developed by its internal product incubator team and through strategic acquisitions. Today, MSI is the third-largest independent MGA, with 1.5 million customers and more than $1 billion in cumulative premiums written.
